  • Southern Vietnam 6-Day Itinerary: Sun, Culture, and Tropical Flavours

Southern Vietnam is a sensory wonderland. From the chaotic charm of Ho Chi Minh City's motorbike-filled streets to the labyrinth of emerald waterways in the Mekong Delta, and finally the sun-drenched, white-sand beaches of Phu Quoc Island, this six-day itinerary offers the perfect blend of urban energy, deep cultural heritage, and ultimate tropical relaxation.

At a glance

  • Route: Ho Chi Minh City - Mekong Delta (Can Tho) - Phu Quoc Island
  • Best Time to Visit: November to April (the dry season, offering clear skies and lower humidity)
  • Getting Around: Internal flights, private cars/buses, and local boats.

The day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: A Taste of Ho Chi Minh City

Touch down in Ho Chi Minh City. Spend your first afternoon wandering past the French colonial landmarks in District 1. Marvel at the red-brick facade of the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the elegant Central Post Office right next door. As night falls, dive headfirst into Ben Thanh Market or join a vintage Vespa food tour to sample your first authentic Banh mi and sizzling crispy pancakes.

Day 2: History & Sacred Temples

Spend the morning uncovering Vietnam’s poignant history at the War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace. In the afternoon, escape the heat by heading to Cholon area to explore the atmospheric Thien Hau Temple, where spirals of incense hang heavy from the rafters. Wrap up your day with a sunset cocktail at a rooftop bar overlooking the glittering Saigon River.

Day 3: The Mekong Delta’s Floating Worlds

Leave the high-rises behind and drive south to the Mekong Delta, the nation's "rice bowl". Board a traditional wooden boat to cruise through narrow canals shaded by water coconuts. Stop at local workshops to see how coconut candy and rice paper are made, then feast on the regional delicacy: Elephant Ear Fish gourami wrapped in fresh herbs. Travel onward to Can Tho to stay the night.

Day 4: Sunrise Market & Flight to Paradise

Wake up at dawn to catch the spectacular Cai Rang Floating Market. Watch as hundreds of boats navigate the waters, selling everything from pineapples to pumpkins, each dangling their produce from long bamboo poles. Pull up alongside a noodle boat to enjoy a steaming bowl of tapioca rice noodle for breakfast. Head back to Ho Chi Minh City or fly directly from Can Tho to Phu Quoc Island. Catch your first island sunset with a cold beer on the beach.

Day 5: Sun, Sand & Island Flavours

Dedicate today to pure relaxation or coastal exploration. Relax on the powdery white sands of Sao Beach, or take the world's longest over-sea cable car to Hon Thom (Pineapple Island) for panoramic ocean views. In the afternoon, visit a traditional fish sauce factory or a black pepper farm to see how Phu Quoc's world-famous culinary staples are produced.

Day 6: Final Dip & Departure

Spend your last morning hunting for souvenirs at the Duong Dong market or enjoying a quiet swim. Indulge in a bowl of seafood rice noodles soup before heading to the airport for your departure flight.

Tropical flavours: What to eat & drink

Southern Vietnamese cuisine is characterised by its vibrant use of fresh herbs, coconut milk, and a distinct hint of sweetness compared to the north. Do not leave without trying:

  • Cơm Tấm (Broken Rice): A quintessential breakfast in Ho Chi Minh City consisting of fractured rice grains topped with a perfectly grilled, sweet-savoury marinated pork chop, an egg meatloaf, and a drizzle of scallion oil.
  • Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang (Nam Vang specialty tapioca noodles): A pork-broth noodle soup with prawns, quail eggs, and minced pork.
  • Fresh Tropical Fruits: Indulge your palate with fresh rambutan, mangosteen, durian, and green mango dipped in chili salt.
  • Filtered coffee: Intense, dark-roast Vietnamese iced coffee brewed through a metal filter (phin) directly over a thick layer of sweet condensed milk.

Practical pocket tips

Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND). Cashless payment is accepted in most of the places but do remember to have some cash with you while trolling outdoor markets.

  • Packing Essentials: Light, breathable linen clothing is best. Bring a light scarf or sarong to cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples. Don't forget high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, and a compact umbrella for sudden tropical downpours.
  • Tech & Transport: Download Vietnam Travel app. It is by far the safest, easiest, and most transparent way to book travel services.
  • Etiquette: Always ask permission before taking close-up photos of locals, especially vendors at the floating markets. When paying, hand over cash with both hands as a sign of mutual respect.
